Lawrence Durrell letters to Jean Fanchette, and other material, 1959-1986.

The collection consists of two handwritten letters from Durrell in Nimes to Fanchette in Paris, with integral envelopes, as well as a long note written on the back of an envelope addressed to Jean Fanchette, Two Cities. In a letter from Engances written 5 March 1959, Durrell congratulates Fanchette on his new baby and job, and mentions that Vallette has given a boost to Mountolive in his review in Mercure. In a letter from 8 August 1959 from Mazet Michel, Durrell thanks Fanchette for a lively visit in Paris, a visit in which he was reunited with Henry Miller after twenty years. In that letter Durrell mentions that he is putting final revisions on Clea, published in 1960. The collection also contains a brochure from the Fifth Antiquarian Book Fair (London, 1962) with an introduction by Durrell, and a speech by Durrell transcribed by Michael Begnal, given at the Fourth International Lawrence Durrell Conference (April 11, 1986) held at Penn State University.
